Practical 4

For Practical 4, we were tasked with creating a game that can be played by kids using cardboard and the different joinery types we learnt in P3.

Before the lesson, the group came together to brainstorm and narrow down to the game that we wanted to do for practical 4. After a long discussion, we decided to make a foosball table as it is a basic but popular game among kids.

We made some simple sketches to allow us to visualise the foosball table so that we can have a better understanding of our product. This saved the group time as we could immediately start once we were at the FABLAB and we could make full use of the time to craft our foosball table.

Figure 1: Preliminary Sketches of Foosball Table by Kieran and Anwar

In order to make the foosball table, there are two main parts. The first part was the "arena", or the table itself, and the second part was the "operators", or soccer players. For the first part, we did not face any issues as it was relatively easy to craft the table and we managed to complete and assemble it quite quickly. However, for the second part, we faced some issues as creating the soccer players was very time consuming. We needed to cut 20 soccer players which was where we spent the majority of our time. It was also difficult to get them to hold themselves together, as the tape we used was not strong enough, and using glue to hold them together would take too long for the glue to dry. In hindsight, we should not have made such a big foosball table. We could improve it by making a smaller version with fewer players which would be easier to craft and also be less time consuming.

How to play the game
The game is played the same as conventional foosball, whereby the person would play with a friend and they would try to use the operators to try to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal. The person that scores would let the opponent start the round. If the ball gets stuck or goes out of bounds, the round would be restarted. The first to score 3 points would be the winner.

After we finished constructing the foosball table, we were asked to do a short presentation to introduce our game.

We were also asked to film a short promotional video for our game.
